As we commemorate International Women’s Day, we at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reaffirm our steadfast belief that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but also a cornerstone for fostering a prosperous and resilient Sierra Leone and a more equitable world. Our commitment to empowering women and girls throughout the nation remains unwavering.

Today, we acknowledge the significant strides made towards advancing gender equality in Sierra Leone, while recognizing that our journey is far from complete. Women are the backbone of our societies, and their empowerment is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty, promoting sustainable economic growth, and nurturing resilient communities.

In collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone, civil society, and local communities, UNDP is actively promoting policies that safeguard and enhance women’s rights. Our support has been instrumental in developing key frameworks such as the National Gender Policy, the Sexual Offences Act, and the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act, among others.

We have invested significantly in programs designed to empower women economically, socially, and politically, with 70% of our resources dedicated to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. To date, we have mobilized $7 million to support the empowerment, protection, and preservation of the rights of women and girls across the country.

Our initiatives are paving the way for women’s entrepreneurial success; we have strengthened access to markets for women-led businesses, improving incomes and livelihoods. Additionally, we are narrowing the energy gap faced by women by providing 200 solar freezers to women’s groups, enabling them to preserve perishable goods and seize new economic opportunities. Furthermore, we have trained 200 young women in solar installations, creating jobs and enhancing access to renewable energy within their communities. This initiative embodies a harmonious blend of women’s empowerment, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

Beyond policy implementation, we are dedicated to transforming the narrative surrounding women’s empowerment and fostering a culture of equality and inclusion. It is imperative to recognize that women’s empowerment transcends being merely a women’s issue; it is a pressing human rights concern that necessitates a collective effort from all stakeholders.

While progress has been made, we acknowledge that considerable challenges remain. Women and girls in Sierra Leone continue to confront issues such as poverty, violence, and exclusion. Nevertheless, we remain committed to working hand-in-hand with our partners to tackle these challenges and cultivate a more inclusive and equitable society.

In conclusion, let us remember that empowering women is not only a moral obligation but also an essential requirement for achieving sustainable development. At UNDP, we stand resolute in our support for the Government and the people of Sierra Leone in their quest for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Together, we can build a brighter, more equitable future for all Sierra Leoneans.
