A new survey conducted by Data Mansah has revealed that 74% of Sierra Leoneans believe the current state of the country does not reflect their ideal vision of Sierra Leone.
Out of over 2,500 respondents, only 26% said that Sierra Leone today meets their expectations.
The survey highlights that economic opportunities and basic services are top priorities for citizens. When asked about the key aspects of their ideal Sierra Leone, the majority of respondents (63.5%) cited the need for adequate, well-paid jobs as the most pressing issue. This was followed closely by the goal of achieving zero hunger (60.5%) and a growing economy (57.4%).
Other significant priorities include peace (48%), 24-hour electricity supply (37.4%), and national unity (32%). Affordable housing (22.4%) and a reliable water supply (16.9%) also ranked high on the list. But some respondents identified climate change resilience (5.5%) and other unspecified factors (1.6%) as key concerns.
The findings means there is a high demand for increased economic stability and improved infrastructure.
Sierra Leone has faced rising inflation, particularly between 2020 and 2023, leading to a high cost of living with increased prices for essential goods such as rice, bread, and cooking oil, while wages have remained stagnant or grown at a much slower pace. The average worker’s income is no longer sufficient to cover basic needs, leading to growing frustration and despair.
“With an overwhelming demand for economic opportunities and stability, it’s clear: Sierra Leoneans are demanding a brighter, more sustainable future,” the report stated.
