Members of Parliament have issued a strong directive to the newly appointed Chief Immigration Officer, Moses Tiffa Baio, urging him to prioritize the protection of the country’s national identity.

The call was made during a parliamentary session confirming his appointment, where lawmakers emphasized the need for stricter immigration policies and enhanced border security.

Addressing Baio, MPs stressed that safeguarding the nation’s identity goes beyond administrative duties, warning that enforcement of immigration laws could lead to an influx of undocumented migrants, identity fraud, and national security threats.

“The Chief Immigration Officer must understand that this is not just a job, it is a duty of national importance. He must be ready to protect our national identity with his life if necessary,” said House Opposition Leader, Hon. Abdul Kargbo.

The debate comes amid growing public concerns over illegal immigration, rising crime rates, and reports of foreign nationals acquiring Sierra Leonean passports through fraudulent means. Several MPs cited cases of identity fraud, warning that such breaches compromise national sovereignty and put economic strain on public resources.

“The integrity of our citizenship and immigration system must be upheld at all costs,” an MP asserted. “We cannot allow loopholes that undermine the security of our nation.”

In response, Baio assured lawmakers of his commitment to enforcing immigration laws rigorously. He pledged to strengthen border surveillance, combat corruption within the immigration system, and implement advanced verification measures for identity documents.

“I understand the weight of this responsibility,” he stated. “I will work tirelessly to ensure that only those who meet the legal requirements obtain our national documents.”
