
Liberia senior Women’s team were last Sunday crowned champions of the 2024 Mano River Union (MRU) Tournament at the iconic Wusum Stadium in Makeni, Sierra Leone.
The female Lone Star emerged as champions, after narrowly edging out their rivals, Sierra Leone and Guinea on goal difference following days of intense competition.
The next-door neighbour finished at the top of the log followed by Sierra Leone U20 and Guinea as all sides finished with five points, a testament to the evenly matched level of skill and determination displayed by the teams.
However, Liberia clinched the top spot with a superior goal difference, while Sierra Leone U20 secured second place. Guinea, despite their spirited performance, settled for third, with a goal difference of minus one.

The closing ceremony, a celebration of regional unity and sportsmanship, was attended by key football dignitaries, including the Sierra Leone Football Association Vice President 1 Harold Nat-Johnson, Acting General Secretary Mohamed Benson Bawoh, North Eastern Regional FA Chairman Brima Jalloh, and Sierra Leone Female Premier League Board Chairperson, Madam Cathrine Sillah.
The SLFA Vice President, Harold Nat-Johnson applauded all participating teams for their commitment and exceptional performances throughout the competition. “This tournament has been a platform to showcase the talent and resilience of the MRU nations. Football unites us, and this tournament has proven that our shared passion can strengthen regional ties,” he said.
The Manor River Union Tournament not only highlighted the competitive spirit of the region but also reinforced the bond among member nations. As the curtains fell, the teams and officials expressed optimism for future editions of the competition, which continues to serve as a beacon of hope for regional integration and youth empowerment through sports.
With Liberia lifting the trophy, Sierra Leone and Guinea vowed to come back stronger in the next edition, setting the stage for another thrilling chapter in the history of the MRU Tournament.
