Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, marked International Women’s Day in Kenema District alongside members of the APC Women’s Congress from across the country. The gathering brought together women leaders from remote constituencies to key district and regional representatives, creating a space for meaningful discussions on women’s political participation, the challenges they face, and opportunities to “accelerate action”—this year’s IWD theme.
Beyond the formal discussions, the event fostered camaraderie, strengthening friendships and encouraging greater political engagement among women at all levels.
In a show of solidarity during Ramadan, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr and her Deputy, Kweku Lisk Esq, made a significant donation: 150 bags of rice, 150 bags of onions, and 150 gallons of oil to the APC Women’s Congress for distribution to women leaders in all 17 districts. An additional 100 bags of rice, 100 bags of onions, and 100 gallons of oil to the Kenema District Executive for distribution at the constituency and ward levels.
Deputy Mayor Lisk also delivered the He for She statement, highlighting his support for Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s leadership and its positive impact on service delivery at Freetown City Council.
Reflecting on the occasion, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr emphasized: International Women’s Day is celebrated once a year, but the goal of increasing women’s participation and achieving gender parity must be pursued year-round. When we unlock the potential of our women, we unlock the potential of our nation.
