The Deputy Speaker of Parliament who doubles as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, has called on Sierra Leone’s two main political parties, the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the All People’s Congress (APC), to set aside their differences and work together to develop a long-term strategic policy framework for the country’s progress.

Hon. Conteh stressed the need for the two rival parties to engage in frank discussions to establish a medium- to long-term development plan that would be incorporated into their respective political manifestos. He emphasized that once this road map is agreed upon; it must be adhered to by any party in power, ensuring continuity and stability in governance.

“It’s high time for the APC and SLPP to sit in a room and bring out a policy—one that serves as a 30-year development plan that no party would deviate from when in power. We all know the issues affecting the country. It’s time to say enough is enough and work for Sierra Leone. We must reposition our mindset to prioritize the country’s interest,” he said.

Hon. Conteh further highlighted the detrimental impact of political interference in public sector recruitment, particularly within ministries like Agriculture. He noted that government investments in machinery and other resources often go to waste due to the appointment of unqualified individuals who fail to deliver on their responsibilities.

“Millions of dollars are being wasted because people are appointed based on political recommendations rather than merit. They fail to show up for work or perform their duties diligently, yet politicians push for their promotions or retention without proper evaluation. This practice is destroying the public sector,” he stated.

While acknowledging the importance of recommendations, Hon. Conteh urged that appointees must meet the required qualifications and demonstrate competence in their roles. He called for a shift towards merit-based recruitment to ensure accountability and efficient use of government resources.

The Deputy Speaker concluded by urging both parties to prioritize national development over political rivalry, stressing that Sierra Leone’s future depends on a unified and strategic approach to governance.
