Every year, delegations from all around the world converge in New York for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a two-week session in which  UN Member States, civil society organizations, and UN entities gather to promote gender equality, women’s rights, and empowerment.

The CSW is a crucial platform for member states to share strategies on promoting the rights of women and girls.

The 69th annual meeting, which commenced from March 10 to 21, marked a significant milestone for women’s rights.

The gathering focused on gender equality, women’s empowerment, and reviewing progress on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – a revolutionary plan for gender equality ¹.

Sierra Leone’s delegation, led by Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, participated in the 69th Session of the CSW.

Minister Mahoi emphasised Sierra Leone’s commitment to implementing the 12 critical areas of concern outlined in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

She highlighted the country’s progress in strengthening legislative and policy frameworks to promote gender equality and empower women and girls ².

Some notable achievements mentioned by Minister Mahoi include:

The Adoption of the GEWE Act 2022, a landmark legislation that expanded women’s participation in politics, enhanced their access to economic resources, and promoted equality in employment.

Gender Mainstreaming: Integrating gender-responsive provisions across key sectoral legislations, including employment, mineral development, and land rights.
