The Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone has issued a firm statement addressing recent security developments surrounding an alleged coup attempt thwarted by the country’s security forces.
While commending the swift actions taken to prevent instability, the organization underscored the importance of safeguarding democracy and maintaining the rule of law.
In the statement, the Lawyers’ Society unequivocally rejected any unconstitutional attempts to overthrow the government, emphasizing that in Sierra Leone’s evolving democratic landscape, changes in leadership must occur solely through credible electoral processes.
The Lawyers’ Society praised the security forces for their efforts but highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in handling the alleged coup. “It is vital that the public is informed about the nature and extent of the security response,” the statement read, stressing that openness is essential for maintaining public confidence in the rule of law and justice system.
In addition to addressing the security situation, the organization called on state authorities to promote an environment of tolerance and constructive criticism. It noted that the essence of democracy lies in accommodating dissenting views and fostering a robust, active, and unsuppressed opposition.
The Lawyers’ Society urged law enforcement agencies to fairly and expeditiously investigate incidents of violence and threats, particularly those targeting opposition figures and civil society actors, ensuring that justice is served without bias.
The statement concluded with a call for unity among the government, security forces, and citizens to preserve Sierra Leone’s democratic fabric. It urged all stakeholders to act within the bounds of the law and adhere to principles of justice, fairness, and respect for human rights.
“The Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone remains unwavering in its commitment to upholding the rule of law and the promotion of democratic values,” the statement affirmed, emphasizing its dedication to a peaceful and transparent democratic process.
