After extensive debates, Members of Parliament have referred the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the Committee of Supply for further scrutiny.

The bill seeks to authorize expenditures from the Consolidated Fund for the provision of public services and other related matters.

Opposition Whip Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara of Kambia District commended the budget’s intentions, particularly for road construction and salary increments, but expressed concerns about their actual implementation.

He highlighted the persistent challenge of inflation, which continues to affect the affordability of basic goods for ordinary citizens, despite significant financial investments, issues like inadequate washing facilities and difficulties in registering for WASSCE remain prevalent.

He called for private sector involvement to support the Guma Valley Water Company and noted the lack of proper court accommodations in Kambia and urged increased allocations to the judiciary.

He criticized the unfulfilled promises to build roads in areas like Kambia, Tonko Limba, and Braimaya. The MP further raised concerns about inefficiencies in cash transfer programs, insufficient funding for the Drug Enforcement Agency, and inadequate training opportunities in correctional facilities.

He also emphasized the poor state of the police and appealed for improvements in the health sector.

Hon. Mustapha Sellu of Moyamba District reflected on the country’s economic struggles, particularly the unfavorable foreign exchange rates. He linked economic challenges to low production and export levels but expressed optimism about the “Feed Salone” project, which he believes will yield positive outcomes in the coming years.

Sellu urged government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adhere strictly to their allocated budgets for effective financial management.

The Committee of Supply will now review the 2025 Appropriation Bill in detail to ensure that it aligns with the country’s priorities and addresses the concerns raised by lawmakers.
