Amara Kargbo, a laborer, appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Pademba Road Court No. 1 in Freetown, charged with murder.
Kargbo faces a single count of murder, contrary to Section 1(a) of the Abolition of the Death Penalty Act 2021, Act No. 6 of 2022. According to court documents, on September 26, 2024, at 14 Sesay Lane, Moeba, Freetown, Kargbo allegedly murdered Moray Kargbo. No plea was taken when the charge was read to him.
Inspector Daboh A. called the first witness, Yayah Mansaray, a plumber who identified both the accused and the deceased. Mansaray testified that on September 26, 2024, he was at Sesay Lane in Moeba, having a meal, when he heard someone shouting, “You have stabbed me!”
Mansaray said he immediately went outside and saw the deceased lying on the ground, bleeding heavily from his chest, while the accused was attempting to flee. Some youths in the area detained the accused.
Mansaray added that relatives of the deceased took him to an unknown hospital, and at around 7:30 p.m., he received word that Moray had died.
Mansaray later gave a statement at PWD Police Station the following morning.
Kargbo, who had no legal representation, cross-examined the witness in an attempt to prove his innocence. Magistrate Kekura denied bail and ordered that Kargbo be remanded at the Male Correctional Center in Freetown. The case was adjourned to November 11, 2024.
