On Monday, September 23, 2024, Acting Chief Justice Nicholas Cole Browne Marke reprimanded six police officers after an inmate appeared in court looking noticeably unkempt.

The incident sparked concerns among the public and relatives about the treatment of prisoners and their appearance during court proceedings.

Justice Browne Marke stressed the importance of maintaining inmates’ dignity, emphasising that every individual, regardless of their status, should present themselves appropriately in court.

“The dignity of the court demands that all individuals, regardless of their status, present themselves properly during court proceedings. Our legal system must uphold standards that reflect respect for all,” Justice Browne Marke remarked.

In response, the officers claimed they generally ensure prisoners are clean before appearing in court. However, they noted that some inmates sell their clothing to others, which leads to unfortunate situations where they arrive in unsuitable attire.

The police department is now reviewing measures to ensure all inmates appear appropriately dressed in court. Officials are acknowledging the need for better collaboration between law enforcement and the correctional system to address these issues.
